What is Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a gentle, body-centered approach to trauma healing. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE focuses on helping individuals release and heal the physical and emotional impacts of trauma that are stored in the body. Unlike traditional talk therapies, SE emphasizes the connection between mind and body, working directly with the body’s natural healing processes to restore balance and resilience.
How Does Somatic Experiencing Work?
Somatic Experiencing is based on the understanding that trauma disrupts the body’s natural ability to regulate itself, leading to a state of chronic stress or freeze response. Through mindful awareness of bodily sensations, SE helps individuals complete the body’s natural responses to stress and trauma, allowing the nervous system to return to a state of equilibrium.
In a session, the therapist guides the client to slowly and safely explore their body’s sensations, tracking the physical and emotional responses that arise. This process helps to gently discharge the trapped energy associated with trauma, promoting healing and restoring a sense of safety and well-being.
Who Can Benefit from Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing can be beneficial for individuals who have experienced various forms of trauma, including but not limited to:
Physical or emotional abuse
Accidents or injuries
Medical trauma or surgeries
Natural disasters
PTSD
Chronic stress
Somatic Experiencing is also effective for those dealing with anxiety, depression, and other stress-related conditions. By focusing on the body’s innate capacity to heal, Somatic Experiencing supports a holistic approach to wellness, empowering individuals to regain control of their lives and experience a greater sense of peace.
