Warming Winter Foods
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), consuming seasonal vegetables that have warming properties can be beneficial during winter. These vegetables are believed to help nourish the body, support the Kidneys, and generate warmth.
Here are some commonly recommended vegetables:
Root Vegetables: Root vegetables are considered grounding and nourishing during winter. They tend to have sweet or neutral flavors and support the Earth element.
Examples include carrots, sweet potatoes, turnips, parsnips, radishes, and daikon radish.
Winter Squash: Varieties of winter squash, such as butternut squash, acorn squash, and pumpkin, are often recommended in TCM during the colder months. They are warming vegetables and can help strengthen the Spleen and Stomach.
Dark Leafy Greens: Although winter is generally associated with contracting energy, some dark leafy greens can still be consumed during this season.
These include kale, spinach, Swiss chard, and collard greens. They provide essential nutrients and nourish the Liver and promote blood circulation.
Cabbage Family Vegetables: Vegetables from the cabbage family, including cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli, are often recommended in TCM during winter.
They have a warming nature and can help support digestion.
Ginger: Ginger is a widely used herb in TCM with warming properties. It can be added to soups, stir-fries, or consumed as a tea. Ginger is believed to promote digestion, improve circulation, and warm the body from within.
Garlic and Onions: Garlic and onions are have warming properties and possess immune-boosting qualities. They are commonly used in TCM to promote circulation, support the Lungs, and ward off colds and flu.
